Ralston
Ralston is in south central Douglas County, geographically surrounded by Omaha, but considered a different city. Since Ralston's population is below 10,000, state law technically allows for Omaha to forcibly annex it however, Omaha officials have never expressed that desire. An agreement had been signed with Ralston's then-mayor, Wendell Kronberg, in the late 1960s whereby Omaha would leave Ralston alone.
Ralston has had much success in their high school athletics. Their girl's softball team has won three state titles and their male baseball team has held the state title seven times! The high school is also home to the Ralston Performing Arts Center, a theatre which can hold over 600 people and often is the site for many community events and plays.
La Vista
La Vista is a small city located in Sarpy County. It was incorporated in 1960 and is the newest city in the state. It is a suburb of Omaha and is rapidly growing! The small city is bordered by Omaha and Ralston to the north, Papillion to the south, Bellevue to the east and Interstate 80 on the west, where the city recently annexed large new areas devoted to commercial and retail developments.
Papillion
Papillion is a city also located in Sarpy County and is a suburb of neighboring Omaha. In 2007. Papillion was named the #6 best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine. In 2009, Papillion was named the #3 best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine. Papillion is south of both La Vista and Ralston.
Bellevue
Meaning "beautiful view” in French (Belle Vue), Bellevue is home to Offutt Air force Base, which largely spurred the city's economic growth and population. Bellevue is in Sarpy County, eight miles south east of Omaha. It was founded in 1855 and is considered part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area.
Bellevue is also home to Fontenelle Forest, 1,400acres of privately owned forestland with 17miles of hiking trails, displaying views of the Missouri River and the surrounding area. It includes the site of Fontenelle's Post. Hayworth Park at the Missouri River is also a popular tourist attraction, featuring the start of a walking trail that stretches many miles across Bellevue.
Gretna
Gretna is in Sarpy County and located south west of Omaha. Gretna started shortly after the Burlington Railroad built a short line between Omaha and Ashland in the summer of 1886. Advent of the village of Gretna on this new laid rail line was the cue for the exit of the nearby trading post of Forest City, which had existed since 1856. The village was incorporated by July 10, 1889. The name suggests Scotland's Gretna Green, the ancestral county of some of the earliest settlers.
Rural Locations
If you're looking for a rural setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, perhaps a little more privacy or lots of land, you may consider Wahoo, Waterloo or Valley. All are located just west of Omaha, still in Douglas county, and accessible to the city via the interstate. To the north of Omaha is Bennington and Blair, both offering spacious rural accommodations.
