West Omaha and Elkhorn

West Omaha is a geographic area that generally includes all points west of 72nd Street. Homes, homes and more homes: that's what West Omaha is all about. Housing developments, shopping centers, cineplexes, restaurants and other conveniences can be found around every corner. Businesses thrive as well, with many major corporations - including Lucent Technologies, Oriental Trading Company and Omaha Steaks - operating here.

Shoppers find four major shopping malls, including the newest, Village Pointe. For rest and relaxation, hiking, fishing and boating are available at Zorinsky Lake. If you love seafood, but aren't interested in catching it yourself, try Charlie's on the Lake. West Omaha continues to expand as new retail stores, offices, homes, and schools are being built every day.

Western Omaha is home to several communities, including the historical village of Boys Town. This non-profit organization provides services for at-risk children and families in the community and encapsulates 1500 acres. Another smaller neighborhood in west Omaha is Millard (the downtown portion often being referred to as "Old Millard”). It was annexed by Omaha in 1971 and has experienced a large amount of expansion.

Elkhorn

Elkhorn was named by the Omaha tribe of Native Americans after the river of Elkhorn, or Elk’s Horn. Founded in 1865 and platted in 1867, Elkhorn was a municipality until it was annexed by Omaha in 2005.

Located northwest of downtown Omaha, Elkhorn is home to the State Historic Preservation Office whose goal is to "promote the preservation and enhancement of the cultural resources of the state of Nebraska”, as well as several parks and areas of recreation. Like the rest of West Omaha, Elkhorn is expanding rapidly.
